247 - CADILLAC Type 55 Phaeton

On-site auction

Closing date

Starting price 24.000 €

BODYWORK: The body is in excellent condition. It was fully restored several years ago and now displays a light patina, but no notable defects. The colours are correct and preserve all the original features. This example is a phaeton or torpedo - a four-door convertible capable of accommodating seven passengers, including the folding rear compartment seats.

MECHANICAL CONDITION: Powered by a robust 90-degree Flathead V8 engine with a displacement of 314 cubic inches (5.2 litres), featuring electric start, an aluminium crankcase, and cast-iron cylinders and heads. The engine is coupled to a dry multi-plate clutch and a conventional three-speed sliding-gear manual transmission housed in an aluminium casing. Its 70 hp output is transmitted to the rear wheels via an open driveshaft and a floating rear axle. The car has a wheelbase of 125 inches, 35 x 5-inch tyres, and a track width of 56 inches. It underwent a complete restoration years ago and was used regularly thereafter. In recent years, however, it has seen little use, so a light mechanical check would be advisable.

INTERIOR: In very good condition, featuring its luxurious black leather upholstery in fine order. The wooden trim is also well preserved. All original features have been retained. It includes the optional period “fat man” detachable steering wheel, which greatly facilitates the driver’s entry and exit.

DOCUMENTS: Registered as a Historic Vehicle in Spain, with all the corresponding exemptions and advantages.

HISTORY: The Cadillac V8 was introduced in September 1914 for the 1915 model year. Although other V8 engines existed at the time, most were short-lived prototypes, so Cadillac’s engine has long been regarded as the first mass-produced V8.

In the United States, Cadillac had earned an outstanding reputation for introducing the first practical electric starting, lighting, and ignition system, as well as for its precision manufacturing, which ensured the complete interchangeability of components. These achievements earned the company two prestigious Dewar Trophies from Britain’s Royal Automobile Club for technical innovation. Consequently, Cadillac proudly adopted the motto “The Standard of the World.”

This particular vehicle corresponds to the 1917 Model 55. It spent most of its life in the United States, where it was restored, before being imported to Spain around 25 years ago and registered as a historic vehicle. It enjoyed regular use for many years, participating annually in several rallies, including the renowned Barcelona-Sitges event. Although it has been in use until quite recently, it has seen very limited use over the past few years.
