HISTORY: In early 1962, Mototrans, Ducati’s Spanish subsidiary, introduced the new 48 Sport, a miniature sports motorcycle that became the dream of many young riders. Its small 48 cc two-stroke engine produced 4 hp at 8,600 rpm, more than double the output of the Piuma, the base model in the brand’s moped range. It was equipped with a three-speed gearbox operated from the left handlebar and was capable of reaching a top speed of 70 km/h.
However, three years later, new traffic regulations limited the maximum speed of mopeds to 40 km/h. As a result, the Barcelona firm decided to offer a new version called the 48 TS, featuring the same mechanical base but fitted with a 12 mm Dell’Orto carburettor instead of the 15 mm unit used on the Sport, naturally resulting in somewhat lower performance.
The 48 TS offered here is a 1967 example, beautifully restored and requiring only a minimal tune-up to return to the road.
