BODYWORK: The second series of the XJ, introduced in 1981, received several aesthetic updates. The rear panel, previously finished in black, was now painted in the body colour; new 5-spoke alloy wheels were added; chrome inserts were fitted to the upper sections of the bumpers; and elm wood inlays were incorporated into the dashboard and door panels. This example remains in original, unrestored condition but is very well preserved. Most of the paintwork appears to be original and still retains its full shine.
MECHANICS: From July 1981 onwards, the XJ-S was renamed XJ-S HE (High Efficiency) thanks to a newly developed, far more efficient engine featuring a combustion chamber designed by Swiss engineer Michael May, which provided 295 hp for European models and 263 hp for American versions. This unit has been off the road in recent years and will require a full mechanical inspection.
INTERIOR: In very good, exceptionally well-preserved condition. A beautiful combination of light-coloured leather and wood, with virtually no visible defects, almost as it left the factory. The wood trim is perfectly preserved. The excellent overall condition of the interior corresponds with the indicated mileage.
DOCUMENTS: With original Spanish documentation.
HISTORY: This model faced a major and almost impossible task: succeeding the E-Type. The XJ-S showed a clear shift in character compared with its predecessor. Whereas the E-Type excelled in sportiness, the XJ-S placed comfort at the forefront. However, performance was not forgotten; while the E-Type did not receive a V12 until much later, the XJ-S was fitted from the outset with Jaguar’s well-known 5.3-litre V12 engine.
The original destination of this particular unit is unknown; it was presumably imported second-hand into Spain, where it was registered in 1994. It has spent the past several years on display in a museum and has therefore seen very little recent use.
